Different Names And Identifies Of The Supreme Being

By Cynthia Wilson

When it comes to religious beliefs, there are a number of different names for God. In most, the Supreme Being refers to God, Jesus or the Holy Trinity. Although, there are others in which the term refers to a higher power or powers of a specific nature.

While this is the case, philosophers, scientists and theologians often refer to the entity known as God by several different names. In some cases, the term used is Source while in others it could be the Creator, the Divine or the Universe. As such, it is also important to understand that different branches of faith and religion often have a different understanding as to higher power or powers.

One area in which the term Source or Universe is among those known as Deists. For, these individuals often believe in a number of different deities, or at the very least worship God as a deity. In most areas, those whom worship a multitude of deities are considered to be heathens or pagans by those of the Christian faith. Whereas, in some cases, there are even some pagans whom also worship the Creator of the Universe and hold that being above others.

In most areas, paganism is often seen as a cult whether those involved are practicing witchcraft or otherwise. For, while most Catholic and Christian rituals were handed down from ancient pagan traditions, many in the faith often see those involved in the practice as doing the work of Satan or the devil. Whereas, those involved often believe that Wicca and other branches of paganism are actually still the oldest religions known to man.

In the better known aspects of religious beliefs, the term Supreme as related to God often holds different names or titles. For example, in Islam, God is known as Allah. Whereas, in Judaism, religious members of society often refer to Yahweh. While those practicing Sikhism pray and subscribe to God by the name of Waheguru, or teacher of all things.

Ultimately, the decision as to whether to believe in God or otherwise, is a personal one. Although, it remains a heated debate among philosophers, scientists and theologians around the world. For, the existence of a higher power or powers often has to be taken based solely on faith related to something unseen.

In most cases, individuals working in the field of science tend to believe in theories such as the big bang which override God as being the creator of the universe. Although, there are some whom have more open minds as to the possibility that God and science can exist in the same universe. Still, most scientists follow the scientific method in which theories must have verifiable proof in order to prove such an existence.

Definitions and positions related to a higher power can often be positive or negative in nature. Atheism, while some believe is a religion of non-belief, and Theism, which refers to belief are both outside the Christian faith. While others believe these as well as Gnosticism and agnosticism are all part and parcel to some aspect of a religious or spiritual path.
