The 2011 Shame DVD And Sex Addiction

By Raymond Campbell

When it comes to talking about sex addiction, it can often be a difficult topic. While this is the case, the Shame DVD can often help introduce the topic in a non-threatening way. Still, it is often good to be cautious before suggesting someone is suffering from sex addiction.

For the film primarily deals with a sex addict and overwhelming urges associated with this type of addiction. The first ten minutes of the film introduces the addict, the addiction and family relationships. While this is the case, these introductions are made using little dialogue though leaving a lot to the imagination of the audience.

In fact, there are many areas of the film in which facial expressions and gestures are used rather than intense language or dialogue. In addition, what many agree is excellent cinematography and editing also play a vital role in bringing the plot and storyline to life. Still, most reviews suggest that the film would have been better with more dialogue.

Others have suggested that the film should be considered the feel bad movie of 2011. For, while being a second feature film directed by Steve McQueen, it falls short of the first, Hunger which focused on a character whom went on a hunger strike in Ireland in 1981. Whereas, in Shame, the director focuses on a character whom is a sex addict and well known businessman.

Once the sister comes to stay, the man has to find alternative methods for satisfying an insatiable need for sex. For, the arrival and extended stay have taken away a great deal of privacy. As such, the character must find different places where privacy is available, even if at times risk getting caught by co-workers at work or staff at public venues.

While engaging with others in social activity, the man is fine and can socialize without issue. At the same time, when left alone, there is often nothing more important than masturbation and orgasm. In the process, the character often looks at online pornographic websites, calls talk lines and looks at nude pictorials in magazines.

In fact, even when at work, it is hard for the character not to drift off and daydream either about a fellow co-worker or an online fantasy. As such, the addiction is far from private. For, it is during this time that addiction starts to become visible to others.

The audience often becomes aware of the character's love of sex at the beginning of the film. For, the opening scene shows a naked man, sheets pulled up, breathing intensely. As such, it appears as though the man has just masturbated or had a rather taxing sexual encounter.

Once the sex addiction is revealed, there are many points in the film which equate the need for sex as being equal to that of a junkie in need of a fix. For, the character's sex addiction begins to interfere with all areas of life. Whether that be the daydreams and fantasies at work, financial issues, or the difficult relationship with the sister which continues to unravel throughout the film. .
