How Individuals Grow With DBT New York

By Steven Hill

DBT has grown in leaps and bounds in the last couple of years. In the beginning stages, DBT New York was solely assigned for patients who suffered from borderline personality disorder, but it has now broadened. Patients with addictions will also benefit.

Besides borderline patients, it also attracts individuals who are having negative thought patterns running through their heads. However this is not something that cognitive behavior therapy can address. It is more severe and relates to patients who have suicidal thoughts. These patients will be constantly ruminating which will lead them to suicide.

They will be taught various skills to cope with situations in their life. They will learn to regulate their emotions. This particularly relates to the person with borderline tendencies. They are known to react at the drop of a hat. When mindfulness is introduced and they include this into their daily routine, they find that they are able to improve in the way in which they react like this.

Borderline patients have been successfully treated with this particular approach to therapy. These types of patients struggle daily. They have a hard time with relationships, both of a personal nature as well as in the workplace. Then tend to react negatively. The process of DBT is such that the patient will learn about methods where they become more positive and begin to think before they react.

Sometimes it is necessary to include close family members into the therapeutic environment. They will need to practice working on role play. This is more practical. This will help them to move towards their goals. Loved ones also need to know how to support their partner, spouse or family member. It is not always easy to know how to go about this.

It is important for the patient not to suddenly leave the process abruptly. They may seem as if they have improved. They may feel as if they are able to make their own decisions and get on with their life. However, it can be a big decision to try and be independent without the therapist. One needs support in one form or another. Often close friends or family can bring you down. This type of support can come in the form of an informal groups.

The movement is partly based on that of the Buddhism religion. In saying this, the therapy is not religious. You simply learn to meditate and spend time on your own. This allows you to let go of any anxiety. You learn to remain in the present which is something that a lot of individuals have a problem with. When you are in the present, you won't have as many negative thoughts. You will begin to think more clearly.

An individual should always be working towards specific goals in their lives. They should notice when there are certain signs and symptoms which tells them that they are slipping back into their old ways. Their therapist should always be available should they want to discuss these aspects with him or her. Therapy is a process and it is only complete when all of the stages have been processed.
