With Child And Adolescent Therapy Rochester MI Youngsters Can Gain Better Perspective

By Laura Robinson

Modern life is complex and lots of people find it very difficult to cope from day to day. Children, especially, are under great pressure. Life is no longer as simple as it used to be. They are under tremendous peer pressure and they live in a materialistic world that focuses on possessions, rather than values. Many children lose their way and develop behavioural problems. Yet, with assistance from a professional specializing in child and adolescent therapy Rochester MI young patients can learn to cope with modern life.

Families used to be the foundation of society, the save haven where children received love and attention and where they developed their own system of values and norms. Unfortunately, millions of children now grow up in single parent homes and the parent is often so busy trying to make ends meet that the children are largely left to their own devices. All too often parents do not even realize that their children are experiencing problems.

Modern children are exposed to dangers virtually unknown by their parents. Drugs are available freely and an increasing number of children abuse both alcohol and drugs. In addition, children are expected to do well at everything. Their lives are rigidly structured from a young age and they no longer have the luxury of simply being children and to lead uncomplicated lives.

Psychologist agree that the number of children suffering from depression, behavioural problems and other psychological conditions is on the increase. If they do not receive professional treatment they are in grave danger of growing up as poorly adjusted adults that will not be able to play any meaningful role in society. Sadly, many parents think that their troubled children are simply going through a phase.

Parents and other caregivers should be aware of the signs that may indicate that children may be in need of professional help. Such signs include a sudden lethargic attitude, aggression, insomnia and a lack of appetite. Many troubled children regress to behaviour such as bed wetting. They also often do worse at school and they withdraw socially. When such signs are spotted it may be necessary to obtain professional advice.

Psychologists agree that it is best to choose a therapist that specialize in helping children and teenagers. Reputable therapists will perform a full assessment, including a thorough medical examination before taking on the patient. Parents will have to accept the fact that the relationship between the child and the therapist will be confidential and that the therapist will not reveal the details of their sessions unless a very serious matter arises.

Parents must accept the fact that therapists cannot guarantee results and that they cannot predict how long the treatment will last. They have to first gain the trust of the patient and only then can treatment proceed. Therapists also cannot solve the problems of their patients. They can simply teach the patient techniques that will help him identify his problems and their causes and to then find solutions.

Troubled children all too often grow into troubled adults. Parents should spend time with their children and listen to them. When they cannot cope, they need professional help. Every child deserves the chance to be happy and to enjoy a carefree childhood.
