New York City Ghost Tour

By Frances Stone

In its 400 years, New York City has seen much excitement, drama, and intrigue. It is no surprise that this sprawling metropolis should teem with ghosts. A New York City ghost tour is a great way to learn more about the famous city. The tours are held year round, cater to different ages and interests, and range from eerily interesting to really, really scary.

The city of New York, NY, has a rich history. There is no period of American life in which this metropolis has not figured prominently. Among its famous residents were statesmen (and mere politicians), soldiers, pirates, authors, artists, and people known mainly for their fabulous riches. Well-documented events seen to have left some participants behind, and countless lesser known stories help fuel the urban legends.

The tours have one thing in common - ghosts - but the themes vary. You can walk in the footsteps of Edgar Allen Poe or Walt Whitman. You can see the sites of former buildings and find out why they were significant, or you can learn more about structures that still stand. Neighborhoods in the Big Apple are as famous as people. Exploring Greenwich Village after dark with a well-informed guide shows you a whole new perspective on this renowned area.

The tours involve walking (up to a mile), but the pace is leisurely. Comfortable shoes are a must. A tour may take 90 minutes, while others may last two hours. There are tours for all ages from children to senior citizens, and group rates can apply if you want to take a party. The tours go year-round, rain or shine, indoors and out. Private tours can be arranged. Gift certificates are available.

As far as location goes, New York, NY, has haunted apartments, penthouses, mansions, and townhouses. Ghosts reportedly roam museums, firehouses, hotels, cocktail lounges, and churches. Grandfather clocks talk, doors slam, floors creak, and the air grows cold when ghostly presences are near. Revolutionary soldiers, little girls, beautiful but doomed women, and famous people are 'seen' often enough to make certain spots notorious.

On a tour, you will hear 'real history' and 'true ghost stories'. This may sound like a dubious claim, but it feels right after darkness falls on the streets. Revolutionary soldiers and Twenties flappers really did live here, and they reportedly still do. All the years of love and hate, wealth and poverty, fame and failure, and war and peace have left their mark.

Mark Twain is one such personage. He wrote about meeting a ghost while in the Big Apple. He also has reportedly been 'seen' now and then since his death in 1910. Some guides relate sightings or experiences of their own. If you want chills and thrills, choose one of the tours that focus more on legends and folk tales. Others may prefer one of the more sedate forays into history.

After all, there have been enough strange happenings in New York City to fill all its many boroughs with shades of the past. The tours are fun for visitors and also for those born and raised in the area.
